Do Austrian Citizens Need a Visa for Vietnam? (2026)
Do Austrian Citizens Need a Visa for Vietnam?
Short answer: Austrian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam. Austria is not on Vietnam’s visa-exemption list, even though many neighbouring EU countries are — which is exactly why Austrians get caught out. The eVisa is the route: up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, entirely online, about 3 working days officially.
Austria is not exempt, and that surprises people
Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Czechia, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Hungary and several other European countries have visa-free entry to Vietnam for up to 45 days. Austria does not.
This matters because travel advice passed between friends in the region is often wrong by one border. An Austrian travelling with German friends who need nothing will still need an eVisa, and airlines check before boarding.
Exemption lists are set by resolution and do change. Check close to departure; the official source is evisa.gov.vn.
What to have ready
- An Austrian passport valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, with 2 blank pages
- A clear scan of the bio page
- A photo, 4x6cm, white background, no glasses, both ears visible
- Your flight details and your first hotel in Vietnam
- The exact airport from your ticket
Timing: the European window is narrow
Vietnam is 5 to 6 hours ahead of Austria depending on daylight saving. Vietnamese government offices run 7:30 to 17:30 local time, which is roughly 1:30 am to 12:30 pm in Vienna.
The consequence is counter-intuitive and costs Austrians a day routinely: apply in the Austrian morning, not the afternoon. An application sent at 5pm Vienna time reaches a closed office and does not start moving until the next Vietnamese morning.
- Urgent — 4 to 8 working hours, weekdays
- Emergency — 1 to 2 hours, weekdays. See emergency Vietnam eVisa
- Weekend and holiday — a separate tier
Fees are on our pricing page.
Single entry or multiple entry?
Government fees are USD 25 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry, both up to 90 days, and non-refundable even if the application is refused.
Austrians flying this far usually build a wider trip — Cambodia, Laos, Thailand. If you will leave Vietnam and come back, take multiple entry. Re-entering on a single-entry eVisa is not possible.
Where you can enter
Vietnam accepts eVisas at 83 international border gates since Resolution 389/NQ-CP added 41 in December 2025. Austrians typically connect through a Gulf or Asian hub into Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City), Noi Bai (Hanoi) or Da Nang. The gate on your eVisa must match your ticket, and a mismatch can mean refused boarding at your connection, not in Vietnam.
Why applications get refused
- Photo ratio. 4x6cm is taller than wide; square crops fail.
- Umlauts and name spelling. Enter the name exactly as the passport’s machine-readable zone renders it, which is where Ö, Ä and Ü are transliterated. Use that rendering, not the decorative spelling.
- Airport mismatch with the ticket.
- Passport expiring inside 6 months of entry.
- Entry date set after arrival. You cannot enter before the eVisa starts.
Applying yourself vs using us
You can apply directly at evisa.gov.vn for the government fee alone. If your trip is a week or more away and your documents are straightforward, that is the sensible route. Our service fee buys speed, a check before submission and follow-up — worth it inside 72 hours, after a refusal, or when a name does not map cleanly onto the form.
We are a licensed Vietnamese tourism-services agent, not a government body.
